The Freedom Scale

The Freedom Scale, Christopher CookThere is apparently yet another new libertarianism-related book in the works: The Freedom Scale: An Accurate Measure of Left and Right, by one Christopher Cook, whom I have never heard of before (h/t Adam Haman). See:

My initial impressions from a quick glance:

  • Yet another book on libertarianism?
  • And from some no-name: not a known scholar, not a professor or academic or known thinker, not a known intellectual?
  • So it appears to be a totally amateur and crankish effort. For heaven’s sake, look at the way he slaps slogans randomly on the front cover
  • With a copyright notice? So he’s not solid on IP…
  • And the book is some unwieldy work in progress … hidden behind a paywall… (another reason my impression is from a quick glance–I’m not paying this dude)
  • With a bad title…

But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe this will turn out to be a masterpiece.

For some lists I’ve collected of classic and seminal works by known and respected scholars, as well as more recent and often amateur efforts, see The Greatest Libertarian Books (a few of the more recent works that also explicitly condemn IP are mentioned in Stephan Kinsella, “Against Intellectual Property After Twenty Years: Looking Back and Looking Forward,” in Legal Foundations of a Free Society (Houston, Texas: Papinian Press, 2023), n.21).
